More Than Alive Scarf & Peppermint Essential Oil Review & Giveaway

More Than Alive Silk Scarf & Peppermint Oil Giveaway

Overall Rating:

More Than Alive is an online resource for a plethora of things ranging from food storage, water filters, bulk food items, books, supplements and clothing accessories. I have tried many of their bulk superfoods before and have been very pleased with the quality of their products.

I was excited to try their silk scarves! What perfect timing, as it is getting very chilly here in the midwest. They are soft, beautiful and moderately warm. I love how vibrant the colors are! They are the perfect accessory for the winter months. You can certainly tell that they are pure silk by feeling and wearing them. I would recommend these to anyone with a need or want for a beautiful scarf. It would make the perfect gift.

The peppermint oil was something I knew I would love without even trying it. It is aromatherapeutic verified, good quality oil. I’m not positive of what this means in regards to organic, but I presume it is a positive attribute that it is high grade. I use this oil in the Homemade “Icy Hot” that I make.

More Than Alive is allowing me to giveaway these products to a few of my readers!

How I’m Curing My Acne

This is a post that I am writing on a whim. It has been a long time coming.

A big thank you to Tracy, creator of TheLoveVitamin.com who has inspired me to share my own thoughts and battles with acne. (and-what a cool name for a blog!!!)

There’s nothing pretty, glamorous, or healthy feeling about having acne. It’s almost something we all ignore in conversations because to an extent, it’s embarrassing. It is especially frustrating for me to struggle with mild acne at this point amidst all of my efforts to put good things onto and into my body. You would think that exercising regularly, eating a mostly organic diet and using only organic skin products would be the fix, right? Well, I am here to tell you that for me, it has not quite done the trick.

Food & Acne

I came to this conclusion after doing several things dietarily, to no avail. I have done juice cleanses, segments of time without gluten/bread and dairy, limiting sugar, and drinking ALL KINDS of homemade elixir concoctions. I have omitted and added countless numbers of foods in hopes of seeing some progress in my acne healing. Though I have seen slight improvements, these changes have not cleared up my skin.

Not to mention, I’m NOT perfect. I enjoy eating out with my family on a somewhat regular basis. I enjoy pizza, greasy foods, cheesy foods and sugary foods. There is something about being uptight about food that is off-putting to me. Coming from an organic fanatic, that might be surprising. Something that I can tell you about me is that I do not advocate having an unhealthy relationship with food. Eating organic 80% of the time does not mean you have to be a crazy, neurotic, obsessed individual who can’t live freely in regards to food. It’s truly about achieving balance. If you are SO stressed about what you are eating all of the time, then you might as well flush all of your efforts down the toilet. Seriously. No really, seriously. The trauma that your body endures when it is stressed causes all of your vital body functions to take a back seat. This means that your body is not performing like it should be. This is why stress is the cause of so many ailments and illnesses.

It shouldn’t be a badge of honor to worry about food. It doesn’t make you more responsible or accountable. It makes you increasingly sicker.

The KEY is to find balance. Achieve that balance. Live that balance. Remind yourself of that balance. Write “balance” on your refrigerator to keep your mind healthy about food.

True Causes of Acne

What makes the most sense to me is that acne is the result of imbalances within our bodies. You are not SUPPOSED to have acne. It’s not something that you are supposed to live with and endure. It’s a sign that something is off. That’s not to say that it is always easy to figure out WHAT is off. However, it seems there are some common themes in regards to what is at the root of acne:

-Hormone Imbalances (sometimes caused by prior or current birth control use)

This Helps: Taking a supplement called Estroblock. It targets “bad” estrogen, is non-gmo and I recommend the Triple-Strength for acne-sufferers. Also, Chaste Tree Berry (also called Vitex Berry) helps regulate progesterone. Having an imbalance of these two hormones in your body will often result in acne.

-Digestive issues that are causing bad bacteria to effect your skin

This Helps: Ingesting Apple Cider Vinegar, a Probiotic supplement and Pau D’Arco bark. You can find all three of these at most health food stores like Whole Foods.

-Liver Malfunction

This Helps: Taking these supplements: Burdock Root, Milk Thistle, or Liv-Tox (can be taken in place of the other two).

-Ingesting too much sugar and/or processed foods

This Helps: Look to good fats & protein for fuel. Excess sugar causes an increase in internal acity (acne is one results of an acidic body.)

-Over-washing & over-moisturizing your face (this is one that many do wrong-I have been guilty of it)

This Helps: Give your skin a break! Get past the need to wash your face several times a day and let your skin do what it knows how to. Your skin knows how to regulate itself. I even suggest going without ANY face products. No cleansers, moisturizers, serums-nothing. (I know, this is suprising coming from an organic skin product enthusiast, but there is such a thing as too many products). Splash, cool, filtered water onto your face every 2-3 days (once daily at most) and only lightly exfoliate once a week tops! It might sound crazy if you’re been religiously practicing your skin routine for years. If you are still reading this, though, chances are that routine has not cured your acne. Give this new routine a try and you will be surprised at how your skin improves. Some, like Tracy, even suggest to do the Caveman routine: No water, no washing, nothing at all.

-Too much stress!

This Helps: exercising (running, yoga, resistance training), and make some time for YOU. You + nature - cell phone is even better. Remind yourself to not focus and dwell on your current acne. Accept it as the beginning of a healing process.

Keep in mind

If you start to take these supplements, BE PATIENT. Your body will take time to recalibrate and rebalance itself. It is undoing several years of imbalance and damage that your body and skin have endured. I, myself, have been taking Estroblock, Vitex Berry, Burdock Root, Milk Thistle and Pau D’Arco root for almost a month now. I am about to start taking LivTox in place of the Burdock Root & Milk Thistle. I have also very recently stopped using face products and am ONLY rinsing with filtered water every day or two and exfoliating with a Dew Puff once a week max.

I will keep all of you posted on my progress after a few more months of using these supplements. I encourage you to check out Tracy’s blog, TheLoveVitamin.com for a ton more in depth posts about acne and healing it. Here is one of my favorite posts and where I have learned about these awesome supplements.

My Description & Thoughts:

I have really looked forward to writing this post because these products have triggered me to have some pretty profound thoughts (profound for my mind).

Let me just say this. Obviously, I advocate organic skin care products and believe that they are, more often than not, the best route to take when trying to improve the health of skin. The tiny loophole I encountered throughout this entire process is that organic skin care products have not “cured” my acne. Even the priciest, most simple, organic products have not been the “cure-all.”

I believe that is because acne is not only effected by the outside of our body. Acne is a result of what is going on inside of our bodies. Diet, hormone imbalance and digestive issues seem to be common contributing factors to the presence of acne.

I digress a bit, but I wanted to share those thoughts (briefly) because Veronica Malibu products have triggered me to go down a path of truth finding when it comes to acne.

Ingredients aside, I found that using these products together on a daily basis (besides the microdermabrasion, which I used once a week) tackled the inflammation and redness that I was experiencing with my current blemishes. My skin appeared and felt smoother after doing this routine for about 2 weeks. I did find the blemish drying lotion to be unpleasantly fragrant, likely because of its sulfur content. My routine consisted of washing with the mint wash, dabbed the toner onto my entire face (focusing on the “T” zone), applying the Azulene cream all of my face, then applying the blemish drying lotion to problem areas. Each product had a nice consistency and did it’s job well.

But, not all of the ingredients are “perfect” and organic…. That really threw me for a loop. I truly felt torn. I thought, “here are products that are a result of Veronica’s many years in skin care—they are working in minimizing my acne—but they don’t have the cleanest ingredient list.” She does use several organic ingredients, but like I included earlier in this post, Veronica says,

“I do use some organic ingredients, but not all.  I come from a acne background and organic products don’t work on all types of acne.”

This made me scratch my head and really challenged me to have an open mind. 9 times out of 10 I would vehemently refuse to use pharmaceutical products, or products with “active” ingredients. I generally choose to seek the natural route to skin health.
Since I believe part of my acne problem has been a result of years on birth control, I’ve deemed my acne to be primarily caused by a hormonal imbalance. It’s almost like: because a drug could have caused or exasperated my acne, it might take something “stronger” to help break the cycle that my skin is in.
I have felt the need to recognize that pharmaceuticals just might have a place in skin care. I do not think that they truly cure the problem, but they seem that they can be a short term fix. I don’t see them as a great long term fix since they don’t tackle the underlying issue inside of your body.
Essentially, I couldn’t deny that the products were reducing the inflammation on my face, but I concluded that I, myself, would not be likely to establish a long term routine with these products.
If you are searching for a line of products that simply get the job done and are effective in minimizing the appearance of acne, then I would recommend these products. If you scrutinize ingredients lists and are weary about using anything less than completely pure, then I would say find another line of products that suites your requirements.
I had my eye on Veronica Malibu product for a few years and genuinely felt excited to try them. I REALLY wanted to love them in a whole way (effectiveness & ingredients). I do find them effective, and have opened my mind to understand that sometimes acne can be effectively treated by active ingredients that are not necessarily organic.
I hope that this post will help shed a bit more light on acne. I believe that Veronica is top-notch, was a joy to work and communicate with, was incredibly generous, and is extremely passionate about skin care.

My Description & Thoughts on These 4 Products:

I found these products to be especially applicable to our 5 year old who has beautiful, long blonde hair. I tried all of them with her hair and was pleased overall with the experience. I love seeing many different organic extracts and ingredients in each product. Some ingredients I am not ultra familiar with, but all appear to be plant based and free of harsh chemicals. I like that Original Sprout includes a list of ingredients they do not use, that allows me to see that they consciously do not use commonly utilizes harsh ingredients.

I found all 4 of the products to smell pleasant and fresh. Our 5 year old liked the aroma quite a bit. The shampoo lathered up very nicely, provided a thorough clean but didn’t strip her hair and scalp of all its moisture.

The conditioner was very rich and I found that I had to use very little to adequately quench her locks. I only used the condition on the bottom 2/3 of her strands. It seemed like using it on the full length of her hair would make her scalp a bit greasy looking. If needed, the conditioner could be used as a hair masque treatment for dry hair.

Our little beauty has gorgeous hair that is very prone to tangles amidst her days of bee bopping around. The detangler came in handy for this. After shampooing and conditioning in the bath tub, I applied the detangler in a similar manner as the conditioner (bottom 2/3 of hair) and found that it did a nice job of separating tangles and making hair manageable enough to comb and brush through.

Besides using barrettes and ponytail holders, we rarely style her hair in a way that would need gel. So, I tried this gel out on my hair. It adds a nice bit of hold to hair and eliminates any frizziness.

I would recommend all of these products, but I do not see myself replenishing on the hair gel simply because we do not have a frequent use for it. I think they would be great in a family’s shower and tub for the childrens’ bath time!
